Contacting someone in prison
I saw on the news that an old mate of mine has been sent down for a long stretch. I'd lost contact with him and would like to write to him. Anyone know how I could go about doing his?

If you know where he's been sent write directly, if not:

Is going behind a door the only way one receives a letter these days?

I'd like a letter from someone to drop on the doormat.

he'd appreciate a visit more than a letter

Well that's what I intend to do, but I need to find out where he's staying first

visited a mate in Wandsworth a few years back. that place is like the set of porridge, the amount of security checks you go through was surprising but understandable. yes, try and get there in person if you can as it really gives them a boost

Yeah, what's he in for? Assuming a long stretch he's done something appalling? Therefore you are writing to him to tell him what a cunt he is?

I used to deliver stuff to Wandsworth clink when I was a courier . You can almost smell the he dispare as the heavy doors clang shut.

Was bad enough being there for 5 mins , let alone doing a lump.

Find out what prison he's in and then send a letter with his name and the address of the prison on the front of it. Remember to buy a first class stamp which should be affixed to the top right of the front of the letter.

Re: Contacting someone in prison
My Mrs works at Maidstone Prison(sorry no links), just asked her and what you need to do is write to the prison(if you know where he is), explain you want to get in touch and they will ask him if he wants you on his contact list and if he does, then you can then write to him direct. Another way is go to the Prisons website and do it via there.

Oh apparently, if you dont know where he is banged up there is a prisoner location service.

Re: Contacting someone in prison
You have to write to the prison to ask if you can write to him, then await a possible reply? Really? Sounds a bit fucking odd to me. It's a fucking letter, surely you can just write to a prisoner and then they give him his post, after I assume they open the mail first.

PD I'm guessing it's so they don't get bombarded with letters from other criminals, vengeful victims etc

Re: Contacting someone in prison
Maybe, but don't they read the letters first anyway.

Just spoke to Mrs again and apparently i interrupted before she had finished. Apparenetly you can write direct(in most cases) but is helpfull if you know his prison number etc, but sometimes you do have to write to the prison first.
